Interview Julien Bracht

Julien Bracht is part of a new breed of producers, with sweet 22 years he is a real rookie but already has a great impact on our music scene.

Hey Julien, always a pleasure to welcome artists with a different approach to music on our network, and you are without any doubt one of them. You started playing drums when you were 6 years old?

Yes, I started playing the drums when I was a little kid. My mum always saw me hitting things with some toys. With some age it began to be a rhythm, so my parents brought me a drum set for my 6th birthday. I also began to take classes, that’s where it all started. At the age of 12 I was part of a rock group, we were the schoolband and we had a few concerts in nightclubs, but I always needed an authorization from my dad, because I was the only guy under age in the group.

How did you then switch to electronic music?

I was living in Spain from the age of 12 to 18. There I began to DJ in different Bars and nightclubs in my holidays. With 17 I wanted to play my own tracks in the clubs, to give my sets a special thing. With 18 my family and I moved back to Frankfurt/Germany and then the whole thing started with the first visit to my favourite club „Robert Johnson“. I also studied Sound Engineering at the SAE and since then I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I started to give my music to some friends, than to some better known DJs until one of them finally released my first Vinyl.

Who are your role models?

My family, Sven Väth and Heiko MSO.

What does a good track need?

A good track has to live for its own. It needs to have character, a theme and has to tell a little story about the sounds it has. It always has to sound as one thing, not like a puzzle of different sound tracks. When I hear the track I have to have the feeling that any of the elements are the perfect ones for this track, it doesn’t matter if it’s a clap, the hi hat or some shakers. And finally it’s a great track for me when I can’t wait to play it live!

You always explore new sounds but somehow managed to develop a certain style, do you agree?

Yes I agree. I look a lot for feelings and emotions in my tracks. And every sound gives you a certain feeling. But I always go in different directions. Sometimes it is very breaky, sometimes it is a four to the floor techno track, sometimes a more chilly after hour track like „Grace“ on Playhouse, but every track has my energy and my soul, so maybe poeple recognize a certain style for this reason.

Your live sets are never the same – how much is improvisation?

Yeah. I mean it’s a mix of improvisation. Sometimes it happens with my 808, my laptop, my effects ore finally with the most important thing, my drums.

How is the clubscene in Frankfurt doing?

We have the Robert Johnson, which is the best club in the world for me. That’s enough!

Does the fact that some DJs and producers become more and more Superstars affect our club scene?

Yes of course, but I think also in a good way. The scene now is completely mixed and there are no real frontiers in between. I mean at Amnesia its the best example. One day Cocoon, one day Armin Van Buren and Paris Hilton another. Sounds strange, but I think there is also a huge positive aspect, all the guys coming to Ibiza to see David Guetta, Avici etc. are also recognizing the other side of electronic music. So finally the Techno/House scene of quality music is getting also more attention and importance.

How does your perfect day look like?

Doing sports in the morning, going for lunch with my brother and friend to end up in the studio with a new track, which I will play at the weekend somewhere over the world.

Julien in 20 years?

Still a musician.

What would you do if you weren’t into music?

Getting me into music.

Thanx so much Julien, it is with pleasure to see that people like you keep the underground spirit alive, see you in Robert Johnson!
