Thomas Schumacher – The Teleporter

Hello Thomas, it is a pleasure to welcome you in dub Ibiza network.

It’s been seven years since your last album and lots of people will wonder about its musical direction. Please tell us more about it.

TS: I wanted to create an album without over thinking. I just wanted to connect with all the knowledge I have collected over the years and my love for Electronic Dance Music and let the album be without trying to direct it. I ended up with a lot of material and it wasn’t until the very end when I listened to what I had done that I realized I had recorded exactly the album I wanted to.

You feature Caitlin Devlin who gave the voice to another project of yours, ‘Elektrochemie’, and Chelonis R. Jones who worked with you on some releases for Get Physical. How did these collaborations come to life?

TS: Caitlin and I have been collaborating for more than 10 years and Chelonis and I got in contact within the Get Physical days.  Both artists are extremely gifted lyricists and composers in their own right which makes them a pleasure to work with.

How would you describe your sound today?

TS: The basis of my DJ sets are always my own productions, past and present.  The most important thing for me when I spin is that I have a real connection with the people, that way I can direct the dynamic of the entire party.  I always have a clear vision of what a Thomas Schumacher set should be and what should be a journey with peaks and valleys, engaging but never devoid of surprises.

How is your label ‘Electric Ballroom’ doing?

TS: We have just released our third single EVERY LITTLE PIECE feat. CAITLIN DEVLIN and our first album realease is my very own STAND UP due out on April 5th.  I am very happy to be back in the drivers seat running my own label.  I have a great team supporting me and it feels great to be surrounded by good, motivated people who share my passion for Electronic Dance Music.

Do you agree on a massive comeback of deep house? It seems to be everywhere…

TS: My heart has always beaten for both, House and Techno. It is amazing to see how producers like Masters At Work have had such a huge impact on House Music. Let’s not forget, House is one of the fundamental movements that preceeded everything else. I think it is great that people are discovering House Music again through this most recent renaissance.

Are you a member of the German Gema? If so, what is your opinion about the newest idea that DJs pay for the tracks they play?

TS: Yes I am member of Gema and I think this idea sucks.

Thomas Schumacher in 20 years?

TS: Hopefully enjoying producing music and djing as much as I do now although I don’t know if my daughter, who will be 26 by then, will let me get away with it.

How does your perfect day look like?

Assuming that teleportation will be invented in my lifetime… on my perfect day I would teleport myself and family all over the world visiting my favorite people and places.
