There is a wild unbridled energy to Burak Sar aka SIS. At any moment, he will change character; each one of his faces is as emotionally believable as the next. The mischievous schoolboy, the brooding artist, the entertaining clown, the lovable rogue; with hints of criminality, insanity, and tortured genius all in one, and yet, as real and deep as the ink that covers his arms and chest.
That volatile mix is just who SIS is. With Turkish genes, a German upbringing, and a deviant teenage life that saw him tussle with ganglife, SIS is the exact opposite of the cardboard cut-out, squeaky clean radio DJ, his musical style red raw and smoky, as if cut straight from his soul. ‘Confidance’ is worldly wise and complex, much like the man himself. The 10-track longplayer is like an onion, you hear something new with each listen, peeling back its layers. Still a dancefloor album, it houses multiple personalities, world influences, and rampant passion.
One of electronic music’s most prolific producers, DJs, and live acts, he shot to notoriety in 2008 with releases on Cecille and Ricardo Villalobos’ label Sei es Drum, which up until that point had only showcased Ricardo´s own productions, and soon became the hit record of that summer. He followed its rise to dominance in an avalanche of recognition but with this fame came a torrent of expectations and this fiery Aries character found it took some of his fire.
As an outlet to draw him away from this intense lifestyle and the secluded passion of music making, SIS began to train as a horse whisperer, finding the teachings in the fragile language of these majestic animals a fresh form of creative expression. A horse rider since the age of thirteen, the mysticism and magic of this craft has leaked into the fabric of his second album, from the title to its track names. “The most important thing with working with horses is confidence. We grow together and learn from each other, you need patience and to develop trust.” Each track is named after horses from international breeds, with SIS drawn to exotic names from Brazil, ‘Messara’ from Crete and ‘Marwari’ from North West India and resonating heavily with the frequency of the letter ‘M’.
As a young boy, SIS used to accompany his musician father to smoky gigs with his Turkish musical group, where bearded men created hypnotic rhythms and intoxicating folk using only their rough hands, exotic instruments, drums, and spit. The raw intense collaborative music sessions were imprinted firmly on SIS’ soul, affecting him and his music ever after. In ‘Confidance’, SIS expresses a distinctive style that’s influenced not by contemporary club music trends, but by raw musicality and flickers of his colourful past, global ancestry, and intense personality.
