SIMION – LET THE MUSIC SPEAK
Simion is part of a new wave of German producers currently leaving their stamp on the electronic music scene thanks to their many contemporary tech-house vibes.
His latest endeavor sees him touch down with Betoko, another producer with great pedigree. We caught up with him for a quick chat, as he gave us a quick snapshot into his story so far…
What was growing up in Germany like? A great place for electronic music I guess?
Of course! Don´t forget that techno was huge here in the early nineties. People like Sven Väth have been pioneers for electronic music.
Do you prefer to stay behind a mask too – is this something you do when you DJ too? Or what’s the idea here?
Not really. I will not hide behind a mask, only thing for me it is important to let the music speak on first hand.
So what did you study in college then? Any music theory?
I am afraid not! Boring business stuff…
What’s the biggest industry lesson you’ve learned since you’ve become involved?
You have to work hard and then you need a bit of luck as well.
And what’s the biggest production lesson you’ve learned?
Same here…you just have to work hard!
So what piece of advice would you give to up-and-coming DJs and producers?
Be real and find your own style. Don’t imitate.
You’ve just done a mix with Betoko – can you tell us a bit about how that worked and talk us through some of the tracks on it?
Actually our label manager on Hedonism was freaking out with the track list. It took him 2 months to clear it! We have a bunch of great tracks and artists on the compilation such as Noir, Deetron, Cristoph, Konstantin Sibold ,Tom Budden, Betoko´s remix for my track and Andhim´s remix for Elderbrook.
Did you do the mix in one take or did you master it and engineer it afterwards?
We did the mix and when it was done it was mastered afterwards.
So what tracks did you decide on and what tracks did he decide on? Did you do it in a sort of back-to-back way?
We were sending tracks back and forth and when we sent the list to the label we had more than 50 tracks on it.
Is this your first commercial mix? How did you find the experience overall?
Yes this is the first mix for the label as well. It was a great experience.
So it’s an Ibiza-themed mix, but will you be over there at all this summer?
I just came back from Ibiza where I played Sankeys and I hope I can come back more often. It was a great experience.
What’s your favourite thing about Ibiza away from the clubs?
There is this one place called Fish Shack, which just blows me away all the time I eat there. It´s a simple place at the beach, but the food and the view are amazing.
And what more can we look forward to from Simion this summer? And EPs planned?
Yes! There’ll be Betoko’s remixes for my ‘’Why Don´t You Say’’ track and then another EP is coming too. I’m super busy!
