rex the dog – do you feel what i feel
Electronic music heavyweight Rex The Dog joins the Southern Fried stable for his latest single release, the stunning vocal anthem ‘Do You Feel What I Feel’, backed with remixes from Rex himself, Jacques Renault, Kim Ann Foxman, Riva Starr and Tiger & Woods and the energy packed b-side ‘Bonn’…
London based artist Jake Williams AKA Rex The Dog has been something of a creative enigma since bursting on the scene nearly a decade ago. An obsession with classic synthesizers, and the Korg 700S in particular, helped define his early sound whilst a fascination not only with the music making process but all things creative led Williams to have a hand in everything from the artwork, to the packaging, to the videos that accompanied his music. Alongside releases on pivotal labels such as KOMPAKT and Kitsuné he also ran his own Hundehaus Records label and more recently launched a bi-monthly club night, BREED at East London’s Dalston Superstore.
For his latest musical offering Rex The Dog has joined forces with vocalist Jamie McDermott from The Irrepressibles for a record that strikes a timeless note with its arpeggiated bassline and soaring vocal melodies. The package opens with the original version of ‘Do You Feel What I Feel’, showcasing Williams’ deft production, weaving layers of retro synths, bass and drum programming around McDermott’s falsetto vocal, the end result comes on like a modern day Bronski Beat, with real depth and passion dripping from every note. This is followed by another original gem from Williams in the shape of ‘Bonn’, an energy packed, pulsating synth affair that is certain to find favour with Rex The Dog fans everywhere.
The ‘Do You Feel What I Feel’ remixes open up with Williams’ own Rex The Dog Pratersauna mix that jacks up the intensity with a peak time floorfiller that hits the mark perfectly. Next out of the gate we have US producer Jacques Renault who takes the controls and delivers his own interpretation of ‘Do You Feel What I Feel’, the high energy arp lines from the original are replaced with a bubbling disco influenced sound that drives the record into deep territory with layers of organic percussion and an ethereal treatment of the vocals bringing a laid back but uplifting atmosphere. Next up Kim Ann Foxman takes the reins, delivering an emotive and hypnotic mix that blends the vocals into an acidic tech fuelled workout that offers a stunning alternative to the original. The penultimate mix sees Running Back duo Tiger & Woods twist things up with a beautifully balanced remix that loops sections of the vocal over a slo-mo House backing to deliver an instant floorfiller. Finally we have the one and only Riva Starr who turns in a brilliantly twisted mix that perfectly closes the package.
Running alongside the single release is a stunning music video directed by the hotly tipped Scottee who brings in a dark edged and mesmerising piece that is certain to draw further attention to this outstanding single.
A new single from Rex The Dog is always something to celebrate and with this package of remixes and a partnership with the on-fire Southern Fried Records this is something not to be missed! Also, the vinyl version of the single is a limited edition handmade 12” released for Record Store Day so don’t miss out!
