reduce, reduce, reduce!

After several releases DJ and Producer Nick Galemore has made a name on his atmospheric synth-based sound. His recent ‘Orage EP’ he did together with Gregor Trierweiler received much positive feedback from all over the world.

As a productmanager of ‘Kindisch’, Galemore developed the sound of the label and recently arranged the Compilation ‘Kindisch Stories 001’, with own edits of tracks from the Kindisch catalogue. The collection includes 23 tracks by artists such as Sascha Braemer, Philip Bader, Nu or Raz Ohara, besides many more.

Recently we met the berlin-based DJ and Producer to talk about his latest projects:

Nick, tell us about your ‘Kindisch Stories’ compilation. What would you say is special about the mix?

What made this compilation special for me is that I really wanted to test my limits. I didn’t want to stick to a sound I know. I took a lot of inspiration from older compilations – mid 00’s – and listened to them closely, studied them. And then I set out to mix this one – while cutting and fitting each track to fit like a glove so it didn’t sound like I was mixing, but rather telling a story.

You are also the product manager of Kindisch. How would you characterize the labels sound?

The label sound tends to be darker, which is something I am fond of – but at the same time, it’s also more experimental. It takes a different path than what its mother – Get Physical – does. It’s more raw, emotional, and often deeper. If I had to choose a genre, I would call it ‘Deeper House’ – haha, but I don’t want to get caught up in the genre game. If I call something techno, there will be 20 people out there who will tell me exactly why I am wrong. So, take that with a pinch of salt as they say.

Recently you had your ‚Orage EP’ out, that you did together with Gregor Trierweiler. I noticed you always have special atmospheric intros for your tracks. Can you describe your workflow for producing music?

Whew – well my tracks generally show my workflow – the intros are normally what I produce first. Often a pad – but sometimes I opt for a beat (in those cases I’ve tried to make it DJ friendly). I will typically try to create a moment, a mood or an emotion, and then add to it. After I think it is ready, I will take everything away until there’s nothing left to remove. Then it’s done. Like a sauce, reduce reduce reduce!

When you were growing up, were you involved with anything musical ? Did you play any instruments, and if so, did it help you getting involved with producing music?

I started playing guitar at like 10 or so – and started recording & making loops & beats around 12 or 13. Now I’m 25, so I spent most if my life discovering my passion – and of course it helped a lot. Despite all of this, I can not read music, I couldn’t tell you a note by ear, but I can reproduce a tune by ear. What it did help though, I am getting to know how music affects me, and how the general theory of music works. In the end it’s all a gut-feeling though, and I’ve learned how to get the most out of my music, although I am always – and hopefully always will be – still learning.

What can we expect from you in the next time ? Are there any other future projects planned?

Of course! I’m already nearly finished with the next EP, it will be with Gregor again, because that guy is fucking amazing! Seriously, he looks like a mad scientist in front of his Doepfer (modular synth) – pulling cables and tweaking knobs… then he plays a note and turns to me with this huge grin on his face – turns one more knob and then we are both like “That’s it!”. So, yeah, we hope to make a lot of music together, we are just getting into the groove of working together and everything is getting smoother. We are sitting on some pretty bomb-stuff, hopefully it will see the light of day sometime soon!

Thanx Nick, sounds like a promising future – and keep Kindisch just as it is – one of our favourite labels.
