pause – inertia
Heavy-handed techno seems to have really made a comeback of late, not just in Germany and the UK but also in France, where producer Pause is based.
His latest comes on his compatriot’s label, Carton Pâte, and all things considered it’s a fine release that speaks volumes of his likeliness for the harder and more pronounced side of the scale. Full of dizzying slabs of metallic and gothic-inclined 4/4 kicks, this is the sort of techno EP that fans of the genre will miss at their peril.
The business all gets underway with ‘Lunar Attraction’, an immediately venomous and hypnotic track that takes the breath away thanks to its fervent kicks and its undoubted ambiance. Spiky and industrial, it envelops the listener in a pounding haze that they won’t want to jettison any time soon. That said, my pick of the lot is ‘Back to Black’, a track that’s just as dark as its title alludes to. Full of muffled vocals and with the occasional synth line thrown in for good measure, it’s an unpredictable journey that’s full of twists and turns aplenty. Title track ‘Inertia’ is another rollicking joint, and another that’s not without merit. The producer’s class really shines through here, not just because of the track’s clever layering, but also because of the manner by which it keeps our attention perked throughout. Last but not least is ‘-1/2gt2’. A lovely way with which to draw out the EP, it’s nothing if not a prickly party-starter, a description which could be leveled towards much of this release. Once again, Carton Pate’s releases have kept us on our toes for all the correct reasons.
