Masters of deep – Audiofly

Hello Anthony and Luca, it’s been a while since our last conversation and i have to say i miss you guys.

The reason why we are having this interview is because of an incredible mix you produced for your event series ‘Flying Circus’. We had the mix on repeat for about 48 hours and i could not stop the music…

Did you put any subliminal messages in there? Or hidden frequencies that connect to the pineal gland or something similar? I was truly hypnotized…

Ahah. Thanks Mate. We are truly honoured you managed to capture the true essence of the mix but we are not Shamans yet, i promise you. I think the main reason is that each track mixes with the next  from around the 3/4 minute mark and in a very slow manner. What you hear in the mix, with the exception of a few tracks that needed to be left alone, is this constant subtle mixing throughout and that, somehow, gives way to new frequencies. For example, When Dewalta – Rain is mixing into The Donato Dozzy remix we kept the underlaying drums of Rain fade into the latter and swept most of the low and mid frequencies, thus re-enforcing the f drums without interrupting the feeling of the current track. It’s truly what we love the most about mixing.

You are renowned for your extra deepness, is this something one has in the blood or is it a result of experience?

I don’t think we know any other way. Our sound (as Dj’s and in the studio) evolves constantly but we always have this underlaying deepness that we truly can’t get rid of. It’s who we are as artists. It’s also safe to say that, having experienced many of dance music cycles up until now, we have always felt closer to the deeper end of house and techno. I think half of my collection is made up of music i couldn’t normal play in a club because they are too deep. But there is this place in the world where no matter how many people we have in front of us we can play as deep as we want: Romania. God Bless these people for loving exactly what we feed them…

And the sexiness?

Aaaah the sexiness. I guess that one does comes from experience doesn’t it?

Word. How did you select the tracks for the mix?

It was a long process and mostly we wanted to create a mix that, as a whole, you could hear at any time of the day. Also, needless to say, they had to have that underlaying deepness mentioned before. But the thing that ultimately proved to be the most time consuming one was the actual licensing. You basically keep building your mix and then you receive news that the one track you were 90% close to licence fell through so you need to find a replacement. And believe us when we say that we truly obsessed about this. We wanted to try and construct the perfect mix and this going back and forth was hampering our creativity. In the end we made the wise decision of looking into our two labels back catalogue to find those tracks and finish the mix. Two of the tracks on the mix are on Supernature and two of them on Maison D’etre.

And how did the story come to life, i mean you don’t just select a few tracks and start to mix them i guess…

The process was totally organic and something we didn’t overthink too much to be honest. The most important thing was to find the perfect intro track (which changed about three times actually) that would lure you into the mix slowly, leaving you wondering. Our main goal for this project was to be the perfect Music companion to have during a car ride around Ibiza. We wanted to create something that you could play at all hours of the day and would give you different feelings each time you heard it. I know we achieved that when i played the finished version upon landing in ibiza for the first time this season. I slipped the cd into the player and started driving around ibiza and with no specific destination for the duration of the whole CD. I must admit i had a huge smile on my face when the Car stereo played the last note of the closing track. It felt like a great achievement…

Who was responsible for the mixing, or did you share it?

I did the mixing but Anthony was creatively directing at every step of the way. I was always coming to him for ideas and when i was I was In a creative black hole, he would always help me find the right track. After all these years together we have learned to give each other the projects we are most likely to finish faster at our own pace and this was one of them. Once Anthony gave his creative input he felt safe enough to put it all in my hands to complete. At the end of the day that’s the beauty of a duo: being able to divide up some responsibilities and still knowing that your partner will represent the other’s vision the best way he can…..

The other mix – as it is a double CD – was delivered by the Blond:ish duo, how did this collaboration come to life?

The girls have been part of the Circus since last year and there was no turning back. They are fun, smart and super talented and pretty much the perfect fit to involve in a project like this. I remember Anthony and I going through a list of people and when the name Blond;ish popped up we both looked at each other  and silently agreed. When we asked them they were super excited about it and full of ideas for it. It was refreshing and exciting to be part of the process of working alongisde each other and definitely brought us closer as artists and people. I must also admit that, when I finally listened to both sides of the cd for the first time together, we secretly patted each other’s back with pride for making the right choice. It really was the perfect fit in the end.

Talking about Flying Circus, how was the season in Ibiza?

It has been great so far as we have our own crowd who come and visit us almost every week but i must admit that it’s tough out there with so much competition. But we are lucky enough to have a steady crowd coming through and loads of interesting guest that excite the interest of the most discerning people out there. We also have loads of friends who live in the island who normally don’t go out that much otherwise but love Flying Circus and come out regularly. It’s nice to get that kind of support as it’s ultimately a night aimed at a more cosmopolitan crowd and not just the tourist from Uk who you would normally find in Sankeys. Many people who have come this season have told us that they’ve found the best music in the island. That’s by far the best compliment we have received.

And how’s your label ‘Supernature’?

Its growing from strength to strength at the moment. We have been lucky enough to sign some really cool artist recently (wareika and Eric Volta) whilst making sure we get constant releases and remixes from our key artists (Dance Spirit and Bedouin to name two). After all this years is hard to imagine how truly unprepared with were when we started this label but i believe we did quite well. The main thing has always been putting out music we love by artists we respect but there is really so much about running a label that we didn’t know when we first started. Now we are in the position where everything is in the right place and the team working behind the label is super strong and that sort of show. We have our first ever album coming out in a few weeks and we are so excited about it. It’s By Dance Spirit and believe me when i say that it’s absolute fire. We are so excited about it. Upcoming releases include an Ep by Wareika with Finnebassen and Ada Kaleh remix and the aforementioned Eric Volta with Robag whrume remix. happy days then..

Are you aware of a not-so-new buty now very obvious DJ disease called ‘Filtermania’? More and more DJs do this ‘fishing for compliments’ technique to filter music to death by boring the crowd from break to break – is there any remedy against it?

Take a couple of Ego reduction pills twice a day for a couple of weeks. Take again in case of relapse. That should do it.

Your favourite track of the season so far?

Where can people find you on Ibiza if not playing in Sankeys?

We kept ourself exclusive to our Flying Circus night @ sankeys this year (for obvious reasons) but you can find us at the odd villa after party here and there. keep and eye out for it…

It was as always a great pleasure talking to you both, you are indeed the masters of deepness – can’t wait for more. Hope to have you back asap, until then i will catch you on the one or other floor!
