georgi barrel- down
The sinnmusik* label had a 2014 to remember, with tracks from the likes of Roman Muehlschegel and Georgi Barrel really helping to put them on the global map.
Here, they give Barrel another chance to showcase his credentials, something he does with some gusto thanks to the most impressive sounds of the Down EP. As always with the label’s sounds, this one’s a bit of a family affair whereby a host of their favourite producers step up – and it really is quite something to take in.
That said, it’s not difficult to understand why ‘Down’ was chosen as the track to base the spine of the EP around. Prime deep house in the same vein as Jus Ed and his famed UQ imprint, this one could well be from the depths of New York or Chicago and we’d know no different. Curiously simple yet also layered and impressively woven together, it sees Barrel pull out all the trumps.
The remixes get underway thanks to the returning Fasika, who conjures up a playful ravey anthem that’s pretty far removed from the original. Even so, it’s a magnificently enjoyable track in its own right. Adrian’s remix is all about the suspense, although Whedler’s is arguably the pick of the lot thanks to its bulbous frame and its tough exterior. The last word comes from Barrel himself, who delivers again thanks to ‘Forms of Freedom’, another versatile track with shades of deep and pure house textures. The vocals are unusual too, and they help give the track a flair that neatly sets up the intoxicating bassline. Majestic stuff from a label we’ve long admired.
