dean demanuele – lucky
Tech house is a genre that gets much maligned for being somewhere in between house and techno, but when its done right it really is an essential sound that makes clubs go the fuck off.
Someone who has always dealt in the finer side of tech house is Maltese producer Dean Demanuele. As well as being a fine solo star he has also released with Lee van Dowski but now returns to his own label for two more tidy tech cuts.
Said label is Dazed & Confused and the EP opens with the title track Lucky, which is a steely mouthed and solid production with grinding chords, slinky, lither metallic precision and drums that demand you march in time. It’s a standout cut that is full of nice and human emotions and makes way for the closer We R Well. This one is much less streamlined in its groove, with bulky drums, a nagging, spraying synth lead roaming about in the foreground and ominous stabs off in the distance. All in all this is a fine EP from a true master of the form.
