david august – times

David August’s long-awaited debut album, the appropriately chosen, ‘Times’ is void of age and an intimate portrayal of an astonishing young 22 year old prodigy.

‘Times’ yearns to be explored again and again, functioning on many intuitive levels. Hatching dramatic leaps in tempo and style, from cavernous bass drops akin to James Blake, through to crisp sonic distortions and instruments played directly from August’s own classically trained hands. This personal album was written during a year off in which August fully immersed himself in his musical yearnings, realising his fanatical dedication of which love in all its facettes is the main motive.

‘Times’ is emotional voyage that shimmers playfully with darkness and light. Starting with ‘Help me Through’, an insightful journey into August’s world – a defined and compelling universe – it presents a colourful musical spectrum through to the epic finale, the dreamy electronica-outro of ‘Forgive me if I bleed’ that can’t fail to leave the listener breathless and truly captivated.

Trained in classical piano, August studies “Tonmeister” in Berlin currently and his use of instruments and atmosphere explodes with feeling; you need only to check his clarinet in ‘Hommage’; or the spine-tingling piano parts of ‘Blossom’; the equally infectious guitar-strumming groove-giant ‘Watch your step’; and luscious vocal duet of ‘Until We Shine’. August’s voice is a refined instrument too, matched sinuously to the sound rhythm and structures of his music.

The fourteen tracks possess crossover appeal without ever being overbearing. The Hamburg native maintains precise ideas about creating sounds with a warm and somewhat organic atmosphere that can be taken to the dancefloor, yet uphold a purpose. “I wanted to combine all my musical experience in my debut“, August says of ‘Times’. It’s a logical conclusion that this project is different from most in the electronic realm as that its variety and complex tonal combinations mark the arrival of a one-of-a-kind contemporary artist.

Background:

David August was an early starter, his first musical introduction being piano lessons at the tender age of five and by fifteen he was making his first steps as a DJ. As time passed, his ivory skills grew and he came to love the instrument and excelled in its classic format. His first residencies at nightspots and forays into production followed shortly after and in 2009 his first releases appeared. In 2010, as he bid farewell to his teenage years, he joined the Diynamic family by releasing ‘Instant Harmony’ EP and his break-through hit ‘Moving Day’. Remixes for DJ Phono or DJ T. and further artist productions enforced his standing and paved his path as a well-known, promising youngster on the horizon.
