Q+A Federico Molinari – we all are a mix

Federico, we are very happy to have you for a little talk and we appreciate you take the time for us.

You are one of the owners of the record label ‘Oslo’ and also a great established producer and DJ with a steadily growing popularity. You and your label were settled down in Frankfurt am Main for a long time, a spot of origin for good sounds. Now you have moved to the wildest city in Germany, never sleeping and always moving – Berlin. What made you leave Frankfurt?

I only lived in Frankfurt for a short period of time, basically I was living in Mannheim all the time. But at one point both, Mannheim and Frankfurt, were too small for me; considering that I come from a city with ten million people (Buenos Aires). I just had the feeling that it was the right time to move to Berlin, because it is much more similiar to Buenos Aires than the other two cities. Even though I still adore Mannheim and Frankfurt.

We think Frankfurt is a great city, well-known for the electronic music scene and clubs such as Cocoon & Robert-Johnson. Of course Berlin offers a higher variety of Clubbing and Nightlife though – how do you think it will involve/develop the work with your label?

I mean, it is easier to have label nights during the year in Berlin rather than in Frankfurt, because there are more clubs or parties around; and of course much more labels. On one hand, it is nice to have more than one label night a year in the same city, especially if it is a big city with lots of different people. One the other hand, it is much more special if you don’t do it on a regular base. To be honest, I am not really sure, if it’s the best thing to have so many great clubs around the neighbourhood all the time. However, it feels good for the moment. Let’s see what the future will bring.

We would like to ask about your music background. For what you have reached so far you are so talented and in a pretty young age. When did you start doing music and how happened you got in contact with electronic music – or to even specialize with house music? Who or what influenced you the most?

Well, I started when I was a teenager. I was playing different music instruments until I fell in love with the electric bass guitar. I spent a lot of time with this instrument and I was taking a lot of lessons, too. Mainly I was playing jazz. At one point the technology influenced almost every music genre and it kept a lot of my attention. First I started listening to ambient music, then some disco, after that came house and the rest was the usual process. But to be honest, the two most important and biggest influences to me are still ambient and jazz music.

You are from Buenos Aires – how have you experienced the traditional music in Argentinia? Do you think there are any influences in your music nowadays?

It is very hard to describe what in fact influenced myself and if you really can hear it in the music I make. I think we are all a mixture of what influenced us and traditional music from Argentina is very important to me, so I guess it is a small part from a big amount of all kind of influences. I still spend a lot of time with listening to traditional Argentinian musicians.

What would you do if you did not have the chance to survive from doing music? Any job you could imagine to do?

I would definitely like to be involved with movies or sports, or both. But I couldn’t imagine anything else for myself.

If you think about your future, are there goals you are trying to reach with the label, or with your own career? What would you like to change and make better? Any private wishes?

For sure, there are still many many aims, personally and business-wise, that I would like to reach. For example, discovering new talents or taking new directions with the music we do. I think we can still do many things, which are even better than what we have done so far and I think everything is coming at the right time. For the next Oslo compilation for example, we will have a very nice design from a very special artist! We never had anything like this before, but now is the right time to do something like this, I guess. My private wishes will stay private!

Frederico, thanks a lot again for this interview. It was a real pleasure! We wish you all the best for your career and your Label ‘Oslo’. Hopefully everything keeps continuing just in the best ways.

We are sure it will.
