Riding the Next Wave…

Hello Valentino, with pleasure we welcome one of the brains behind one of the most fresh Ibiza parties, Next Wave.

Hello Andreas, Nice to speak with you.

Tell us first a bit about your slovenian roots and how you came to music.

I am coming from a musical family both my parents were involved in music, my father used to be one of our best rock musician and my mum used to sing as a back vocalist in one of my dad’s first bands.. So I was surrounded with music from my tender age. I started to play the vinyls that were from my parents on our home stereo already when I was 5 years old… At the beginning I wanted to become a drummer but was not that easy at that time to endorse for a place at the musical school as it seams that all the kids at that time wanted to play drums in my home town… So the musical school could not take any new student in a period of minimum two years wait!!! They offered me to play the clarinet and I really didn’t understood what this is at that time so I refused and embarked on a new search for noise and soon after had a chance to visit a club with some school friends when I was just 11 years old as one of my school friend has his brother playing and we have been aloud to go in at the beginning of the night. I got hocked up immediately by the atmosphere and will never forget how incredible seamed to me the fact that this people are dancing and there is no band playing and they have a very specific way of dancing. I just wanted to learn how to make them dance like this on my own.. ;) It was the early days of house music and what was coming out of the speakers was something completely different that my dad and his band played on the terrace just next door to the club in the evening.. I got hypnotised from it and the desire to investigate more growth in me on a speed of light.  After that  episode I was on a quest to find out more about it. And in few years later I was already practicing and at the age of 15 already playing in a club.

It is said you first dedicated yourself to the harder side of electronic music, the more techno-oriented one. How did you change for the smoother, more groovy side of it?

Hehe, yeah that is the thing when you become known for something in this world you get marked but the truth is different. It’s true that I got my name on the market with techno music but in reality when I started I was much more into slow stuff as the music that first hit me was from a tape from Movida club in Italy from La Triade a collective of 3 Italian DJ’s that marked the italian scene at the down of the electronic scene in Europe. They were Andrea Gemoloto, Fabrice and Leo Mass who also was resident at Amnesia with Alfredo in the late 80’s and beginning of the 90’s. The music this guys played was so beyond that if you are lucky to have some their tapes you can here music that is still now-days considered very underground. The bpm’s were all around 120 to 124 mx and it was from obscure house to early acid and techno to some serious extravaganza. Italy was a source of inspiration for me especialy in the years from 1989 until 1994 after that every thing collapsed as the low changed and the incredible 24 party scene closed down and in a year everything that was cool disappeared or transformed into some commercial thing. Lately I got inspired by Plastikman, Laurent Garnier, Terry Francis, Carl Cox and so on so it was inevitable that I become more attracted to harder rhythms. But was always keeping a soft touch in it. And also in my productions I was always experimenting itno more styles. So it was a long procedure that lead me to become what I am now. Definitely what marked my sound of today was also defined by me moving to Ibiza in 2006 this had a major influence on me and my sound and my life in general.

Is there a certain ‘Valentino Kanzyani’ style?

I can’t say for my self, I hear people telling me this, but honestly I can not describe it.

Is it true that you are a vinyl purist?

I play vinyl but I am not a purist of any kind I like to play music and the vinyl format is very keen to me as I am using it for almost 22 years. But I use CD’s as well and don’t have any problem to put a USB in the CD player if I want to play some latest tracks I’ve got the same day from a friend and I didn’t had the time to burn them on a CD. So I can say I am pretty flexible on it.

How is your label ‘Jesus Loved You’ doing?

It was on hold for some time, but now I am just about to start releasing again. Looking forward on it.

Any artist you would love to produce with?

Depeche Mode, Portable, The Timweriter to name a few.

Talking about Ibiza, how did you get in touch with the white island?

I came to Ibiza very late for the first time I got here was in 2003 just for a short visit and immediately got catch by the incredible scenery and the people that I encountered over here. It was so colourful, different and somehow familiar. I am coming from the cost of Slovenia that is boarding with Croatia and for all my child hood I was surrounded with white stones and blue sea and also the vegetation we have back home is just the same as here. Just the architecture is a bit different but otherwise pretty much all in Ibiza gives me memories of my home plus all the diversity and uniqueness that you find just over here in this magical place, I was pretty soon sure that I wil be back in this island soon. After that I cam again every year and in 2006 stayed the whole season and in 2009 finally moved here for good.

What is in your opinion the best Ibiza has to offer, and what the worst?

For me the all year around sunny weather and its beautiful nature and relaxed atmosphere. The rest is up to you. The basics are here to enjoy life than there are thousands of option, it depends what kind of person you are and what you may like or not.

How would you define ‘Next Wave’?

A gathering of friends that like to play and dance on a little bit more specific music than usual. Its hard to defined it as we don’t have much philosophy to offer its just about the music.

What can we expect from the season 2013?

The vista club is an amazing location that offers an incredible and unique view over Ibiza and has an incredible potential, we will have some of the best names of the scene playing for our night. So we will continue in the same way we finished last year just adding a bit more of spice to each night with some little adds.

3 Things you would immediately change on Ibiza if you had a magic wand?

I would aloud back the after hours, aloud the clubs to have back open air roof terraces  with a 24hour licence and cut the drink prices in clubs for ad list 50% leaving the higher prices exclusive to VIP tables and areas..!!!

Your favourite spots on the island?

Cap des Falco for nice sun sets, Santa Gertrudis cafes and restaurants for a relaxed lunch or dinner, Sushi Culture for the best quality/price sushi on the island.

What do you say about dub ibiza network?

I really like the Dub way of presenting thing,s it’s a very realistic and straight to the point approach that attracts me – I am a big fun and supporter. Very good job guys.

Thanx Valentino and we look so much forward to enjoy the Next Wave in the beautiful location that is the Vista Club in Privilege!
