durty fresh – the return of fresh ep
If you like your house music sweaty and balmy, then chances are you’re going to appreciate the latest release from the Mental Genius camp. Indicative of the sort of sound that’s regularly found at the likes of FUSE, it sees the label (aptly, we’re sure you noted) turn their attention to Durty Fresh, an East London producer who marks an auspicious start to life here.
Opening up this heavyweight four-tracker, entitled The Return of Fresh, is the sounds of ‘Andiamo’, a gloriously humid and ambient track that plays out beautifully on the ear. Luscious and full of good time vibes, there’s a celebratory essence to this one that doesn’t go unnoticed. ‘What’s My Name’ is the package’s standout offering, however. Full of esoteric and intricate soundbites, it glides with a real purpose – even if DMX’s vocal samples are occasionally a bit futile, for the real magic here lies in the producer’s leveling of the beats.
‘DEA’ is crafted on a druggy tip that evokes memories of Art Department at their best, while ‘Cocaine Disco Shit’ brings us back to the raw thanks to a swirling mass of unusual synths. While we hadn’t encountered Durty Fresh prior to this EP, chances are we’ll be hearing much more from him shortly – especially if he continues at this rate.
