MAGNETIC MAN

Magnetic Man – lots of pull

Magnetic Man came to Ibiza with their brand of melodic, electronic dubstep. They produced a jumpy set full of glitchy sounds with Benga, Skream and Artwork producing a sound that evoked a surprisingly young crowd into a fevour.

Given this group includes two of the founding dubstep fathers (Skream and Benga) I was surprised by the evolution in the sound over time. Midnight Request Line this wasn’t. The sound was full, layered and intensely complex, underpinned by a heavy and meandering bass. When you see how far the sound has come you can only be impressed.

However, what was surprising was the set Doorly performed. A young bass producer with a scraggly beard didnt look to be more than a warm-up in advance of the main set. His live beat manipulation, looping and beat pad use was technically strong and really showed up the ‘Djs’ that I had seen in Ibiza (cough* Calvin Harris *cough) pressing play and dancing maniacally. This was really responsive, the only complaint being that the young crowd perhaps wouldn’t appreciate the sometimes obscure songs he dropped. However, some classic plays of the including the dubby remix of Dead Prez’s Hip-Hop were well appreciated by some of the older heads in the crowd.

Overall a good night with strong sets – 4/5.
