As a brief overview of the relevant electronic radio stations in Ibiza we went out to six stations asking them a few questions to present themselves to the audience:

What makes your radio special?

Our underground radio was born out of a dream of freedom, the freedom to stand out from the crowd and to play the music that really represent a different choice from all the other commercial radios out there. We don’t try to please the people with the sound that they already like, we only care about exposing something really new, something not driven by the commercial logics between all the other radios.

What is the main focus of audience?

Our main focus is the underground scene. We have listeners everywhere, of every age living in every country, especially in Europe but also in Japan, Russia, Australia and many other very far places. People bored of all the other radios proposing the same music over and over, bored of the advertisement, bored to hear always the same thing every day. Our main audience is composed by people who know how much the underground music is related with freedom, and who can understand new styles of music because they love it.

What styles of music do you cover?

From deep house to techno, without the fear of pushing too hard or to have a DJ that expresses himself throughout an eclectic music selection. Underground music is so ahead that most of the crowd is not ready to hear, and that’s why we give the DJs the freedom to play whatever they want without the usual restrictions when playing for other commercial radios out there.

How do you finance the station?

Mostly out of our own pocket, for now, and thanks to some friend’s donations. That’s why we are looking for a good sponsor that understands and supports our underground radio.

What is the power of radio?

Not being driven by major labels and not trying to stay in a certain music scheme to please more people is the thing that the crowd really loves more. No commercials, 24/7 of pure music. Which other radio offers this?

Where can people listen to your radio?

For the moment only on the internet, which means from your browser, itunes, winamp, iPhone, wherever! But we are already planning to go on FM next year.

Balearic Beats Radio:

What makes your radio special?

It is about time somebody honors what made Ibiza famous musicwise, Balearic Beat is a state of mind, it is about the sole love of music, free of straight-laced prejudice, without any commercial aim. It is a homage to the freedom that this island breathes for so many years.

What is the main focus of audience?

We cover a wide spectrum of music so we aim for all lovers of good music, no matter what age, sex or cultural background they have. Music is the universal language, it unites the musical spirit of the Balearic Beat with all that comes with it, a multicultural adventure ranging from a non-comforming lifestyle to a lifelong commitment towards diversity in its true sense.

What styles of music do you cover?

We will broadcast the whole range of the Balearic Beat going from e.g. The Woodentops to Killing Joke, from KLF  to Kraftwerk, Talk Talk to Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bob Marley to Santana and crossing all electronic genres from Ambient to Trance. We start with a massive back catalogue, flavoured with sessions of Ibiza’s finest artists and see where the journey takes us.

How do you finance the station?

As said we have no commercial aim as the music will play non-stop 24/7/365. That does not mean we aren’t open to innovative collaborations in the future, but in our opinion any commercial bias or need destroys the ambition to give the listener the maximum impact of good music.

What is the power of radio?

To reach people wherever they are, whatever they do, in whatever state of mind they find themselves, 24/7. It is an instant therapy towards the better, and it is the most powerful channel of communication because it leaves space for your very own imagination. One of our dreams is to cover a whole city with everybody listening to the same music at the same time, imagine it sounding through all the streets, alleys, places, on thousands of sound systems. That is the power of radio.

Very soon we will broadcast on www.balearicbeats.com, we focus on online radio but who knows what the future will bring. You will find us as well on iTunes and many other broadcasting services and via the usual social networks.

We are based somewhere in the mountains between San Lorenzo and San Juan, in an incredible setting surrounded by nature. If you want to visit us you will have to make an effort and find out yourself.

Ibiza Global Radio:

What makes your radio special?

Mainly because it is the first radio in Ibiza dedicated 100% to electronic music.

What is the main focus of audience?

Our listener profile is the sensualist of electronic music, clubber and lover of day & nightlife.

What styles of music do you cover?

Electronica in all its variations – from Chill to Techno.

How do you finance the station?

With publicity from our local clients and sponsorship of international brands that establish themselves more and more as clients of Ibiza Global Radio.

What is the power of radio?

Its audience and the team of people that build the backbone of this radio. It is a dream team and we hope it will stay like this for many years to come.

Where can people listen to your radio?

On 100.8 FM in Ibiza and Formentera and, thanks to technology, Ibiza Global Radio is heard worldwide in more than 170 countries via our online radio www.ibizaglobalradio.com, widgets, mobile apps and on platforms such as Itunes or Tune-In, amongst others.

Ibiza Sonica Radio:

What makes your radio special?

The live broadcasts and our close relationship with some of the biggest global festivals (BPM, SONAR, IMS, Timewarp, Love Family Park, SV50, Creamfields, CocoBeach, GOA). The coverages contain a high level of emotions so the listener can feel like he would attend the event in person. As well the selection of shows from DJs like Seth Troxler, Eats Everything, Skream, Jackmasters, Anja Schneider, Josh Wink, John Digweed, Soul Clap, Kevin Yost, Audiojack, Riva Starr, tINI, Guy Gerber, Just Be, Andrea Oliva, Ralph Lawson, Kiki, amongst others, and of promoters like Cocoon, Carl Cox, HOSH, Cirque de la Nuit and the island’s residents.

What is the main focus of audience?

Ibiza Sonica is followed by lovers of electronic music in general and of a good life. People that understand and respect the island and who fully integrate electronic music in their daily lives. The ones who know about music having the urge to discover new things.

What styles of music do you cover?

Mid-tempo sounds, Balearic and some soft House in the mornings. Nu-Disco and Deep House for midday. House in all variations in the afternoon. Tech House and some Techno at night. Radiophonic sounds, not very underground nor commercial, just in the middle. The sound of Ibiza Sonica is characterized to be soft, sweet and pleasant although things can get rough sometimes!

How do you finance the station?

Via other divisions of the brand Sonica. As Studio Sonica is specialized in creatin corporative radio channels. And the production of audiovisual shows.

What is the power of radio?

The emotion that music creates, so the listener can feel like he attends an event in person. The power of communication, popularizing spots and events to give them a massive output. The power of information in order to tell the world that there is a whole culture connected to electronic music.

Ibiza Live Radio:

What makes your radio special?

Uniting the House Music Family around the world – and Ibiza is the center. “Welcome to the Family” is the motto, which includes the listeners and every single show/DJ/label involved. A mix of Ibiza residents and international DJs as well as label showcases from the island and abroad form the “Family of House, of Love, of Ibiza” (according to the voice of the station, artist Q DeRhino). We meet our listeners in person doing live broadcasts from Ibiza (next ones at Ocean Drive Hotel, Tantra Bar, F*** Me I´m Famous Airport Lounge) and worldwide (WMC Miami 2014, Brooklyn NY).

What is the main focus of audience?

House Music lovers, people who love quality music as well as new and fresh sounds.

What styles of music do you cover?

From Lounge & Chill over Deep House during the day and evening and a bit of techy in the night time. No EDM and commercial music, of course.

How do you finance the station?

Private sponsoring and cooperations, hopefully we will work soon with professional business investors.

What is the power of radio?

Radio is something people do when they are already doing something else. This means it is integrated in our daily life and so the message – be it over the music or spoken – comes straight away to our minds. It influences and intensifies our emotions. This also implies a responsibility for what is broadcasted.

Where can people listen to your radio?

24/7 h on the website www.ibizaliveradio.com, There are free apps for iPhone/iPad and Android in the corresponding stores. And from Monday to Friday 4 – 6 pm (and for special occasions to be announced) as well on 103.7 FM in Ibiza and Formentera (in cooperation with IBIZA WHITE FM).

The internet station is based in Sant Jordi and will move to a bigger place in San José in winter, where visitors will be welcome. Thanks to our cooperation with the terrestrial station IBIZA WHITE FM, we are lucky to broadcast our associate program regularly from their studios at Tantra Bar, Playa D´En Bossa. Our listeners can meet us there in person and see how we do radio.

OpenLab Radio:

What makes your radio special?

Everything we do at OpenLab has one goal, to deliver the best possible experience to OpenLab’s listeners. Whether it’s the music we play, the equipment we play it through to make it sound even better than the original, the visual art that accompanies it or the transmitters that broadcast it. The other big difference is that OpenLab is 21st Century Radio, so right from the start that means music and visuals together. We see them as a 50/50 affair, supporting and complementing each other.

What is the main focus of the audience?

Our listeners inspire everything we do. We originally founded the station with the creative community here on Ibiza in mind. We have a reach of more than 500,000 people worldwide now and at the same time we have a weekly live event here on the island – ‘OpenLab Mondays @ The Basement, Sankeys Ibiza‘.

What styles of music do you cover?

We play the widest range of music of any station here on Ibiza, but with our own definite take on it  – the very best in new, alternative, electronica and experimental music – ‘niche but deep’ as we like to describe it. Over the years it’ll build into an archive of truly beautiful music. Something we’re actually very excited about as it keeps all that music alive.

How do you finance the station?

When you listen to OpenLab you’ll quickly notice two things – the music is continuously great and it’s actually continuous because there’s no adverts butting in to disturb it. You don’t open an art gallery and cover the walls in adverts so why would you do that to a radio station? That does mean we have to be more creative in terms of finance but to us it’s an effort worth making.

What is the power of radio?

Radio is a companion, a friend and a guide. It’s intimate in a way that television can never be, and yet it’s also everywhere – in the house, in the car or on the beach. Anywhere you can go, a good radio station should be there too.

Where can people listen to your radio?

Lots of places! We broadcast the station on 89.9 FM in Ibiza & Formentera and online to the world at http://www.openlab.fm. Our website supports desktops and mobiles (with dedicated players for iPhone and Android) and there’s an iPhone app you download too. We’ve made sure there’s something out there for everyone and we have a special page of listening links and information on the OpenLab website.
