Maal ft. Sep – No More EP
Now into their third release, Swedish label and blog HMWL really seem to be gathering pace with the records they’re putting out.
Their modus operandi thus far seems to revolve around the label picking pretty unknown artists and giving them a platform with which to show their talents. All things told, it’s worked a charm thus far, and so it is that we switch our attention this time around to Maal aka Marcus Almen, a burgeoning producer for whom this release is perhaps his most significant to date. And with just the two tracks on show, it’s a good job that Maal serves up the good early on.
The first of these tracks is the original mix of ‘No More’. Produced in tandem with vocalist Sep, it initially moves at a fairly ambivalent pace before emerging into a bona fide anthem that’s surely primed for full-on, Balearic floors. Sep’s vocals are a treat on their own, but it’s when they’re paired with the twinkling melodies and a potent baseline that sparks really begin to fly. The Rain Mix sounds like something one of the New York pioneers would dream up, principally because it’s full of drama and heart-tubing violin strings. A pitched back track that would also work well as a dub, it’s full of garage tidbits that work well when paired with the otherwise house vibes. A colourful EP, that’s for sure.
