kris davis coming closer

Kris Davis is one of a new breed of producers that seem to conquer the scene by storm. His latest track ‘closer’ blew my mind, listening to it over and over again i knew it will be the number one in my recent ‘dub 10’ charts. Maybe not a peak time track but definitely one you can win any willing crowd to follow you into the depths of warm, emotional, tech-ensnared house. Every frequency is at its place, the synths are of the finest i ever heard and kick and basslines convert it into an irresistible groover. So what better then to reach out for Chris Davies to find out more about him before others do it.

How did you come to music? And when?

Music is something I’ve been into heavily all my life really. From the age of 10 I’ve been writing songs on my guitar. I’ve never really been one to learn new songs, I prefer to just make my own.

You are located in Portsmouth, England. Is there a local scene where you grew into or did you have to make an effort and travel to London or other metropolies?

We do have to travel sometimes but the House/Techno scene is thriving in Portsmouth at the moment thanks to Love Amplified & the recent arrival of “the Astoria” nightclub. Thanks to these two working closely together, we have had world class headliners on almost a weekly basis for nearly 2 years now.

Listening to your track ‘Closer’ it reminds me more of artists like Mario Basanov or other eastern producers that rise from nowhere, do you have any contact with some of them?

I follow them on Facebook & that’s about it really (Laughs). I have had contact recently with an artist I look up to massively, known as Fables! I can really see him growing big in the near future & we have some exciting work in the pipeline.

How would you describe your music, i read words like dark and melancholic but do not agree at all, ‘Closer’ might have a certain melancholy but always with a positive outlook in my opinion.

Kris1

I like to make deep & sad music, it just rolls off my electronic tongue more naturally than happy stuff. It always has & always will. The odd less emotional melody might come from now & again but it is usually darker.

Would you say that your generation is already interconnected with modern ways to produce music, combining classic instruments with all that the electronic world has to offer?

Music technology has come such a long way in recent years. I’d really like to get my hands on the Sonuus g2m, it transcribes guitar notes into midi data that you can use to play any synth or vst with the guitar. Just think of the possibilities!

When you produce, is it an evolution or let’s say a trip that starts somewhere but has no end yet or do you have a certain pattern already in mind?

My methods change as I grow & learn more. But generally I don’t like to set any goals. I like to just go with the flow & see where it ends up.

Who are your rolemodels?

There are so many, DJ Koze, Robag Wruhme & Christian Loffler are up there for sure. I also really love the early Life & Death style by the likes of Dj Tennis & Tale of us. I find myself so inspired when I go back to their early eps.

Is music a universal language?

It really is!

What would you do if music wouldn’t exist?

I used to be good at drawing, it was music that took over from that. If it wasn’t for music I’d probably still be doing that.

Thanx Chris, it would be interesting to see your drawings but honestly i prefer to keep listening to your music. Thanx for having us and we will keep a closer look on you in the future.
