JFD – YOUR GIRLFRIEND’S FAVOURITE DJS

Jack Fell Down is a duo of british producers that prefer to stay semi-anonymous yet creating a buzz through music lovers of deep soulful grooves.

They are called ‘Your girlfriend’s favourite DJs’.

We wanted to find out more about the mysterious duo:

dub: Hello you two, after reading the short intro on your homepage we are even more curious on who is behind this mysterious name. Tell us a bit about yourself, please.

The anonymity of Jack Fell Down has never been to protect our own personal identity. We wanted to create something that would be judged under its own conditions, something that would be considered for its artistic direction and originality and something where our looks, image and previous encounters did not affect our success. Basically we wanted nothing to be judged other than the music. We did realise when conceiving the idea that withholding personal identity is common place, but for our own satisfaction and our artistic development felt it was the right path for us to take. We could tell you all sorts about ourselves if you insisted but we hope nothing is as interesting as our music.

dub: Is there a political approach to your music?

Our choice to remain anonymous was a backlash to the politics of the music industry and as such I guess we are effected by the bigger political question of what system would we choose. But – not wanting to admit to being romantic Communists or Marxists and influence others with our opinion we shall remain impartial.

dub: Is there a way out of the ‘digital dilemma’?

The Digital Dilemma scares the Sh1t out of us, we have spoke and blogged about this before because we feel that the people that will be ultimately affected will be the people that are currently causing the damage. In the blog we spoke about the sustainability of smaller labels – the ones that shape genres – becoming impossible due to the financial restrictions of “file sharing”, these labels shape the sound from a grass roots level and in a Darwinian fashion the influences make their way to the most commercial recordings. If we take away this evolution our only influence will come from large corporate labels that place profit and loss before the sound and direction of a genre.

Back to the question –  “the way out” exists, it’s about choice and how people decide to consume music. The technology is there to track, monitor and censor the internet. The next question is, “ who really wants this?”. We don’t want this! It is strange, artists are calling for censorship to protect what they own, historically the arts is not about censorship it has been about expressionism and freedom of speech.

dub: Why the name ‘Jack Fell Down’?

We wanted a name that everyone was vaguely familiar with but still held no real meaning, something that could be shaped by how people perceived us. A few blog’s have hazarded guesses, drawing links with ‘Jack’s House’ and house music’s affinity with the word Jack but we never wanted to claim that.

dub: After listening to your latest EP on Southern Fried i have to say i fell in love with ‘Ease in to me’. How would you describe your sound?

Our sound is house music. Without being cliché we try to write music with emotion and depth, house music for a while with the minimal craze was devoid of that. We try to make music that can be incredibly personal on one level and extremely collective on the other. So it’ll give you goosebumps alone but  still be able to destroy a club…

dub: Future projects?

We have so much work on at the moment, some great remix opportunities from our elders at Southern Fried and our own productions. Our second EP with them drops on the 15th Oct and it’s been getting some great feedback. We have a 12” due to drop on Home Taping Is Killing Music (apt) soon, our release on  Exploited with Timo Garcia and friends is at promo at the moment and is turning a few heads but we are most excited about the work we have been doing with Stee Downes, they guy is a genius, lyrically he is very clever and he has a voice to shake the slowest dancefloor to the ground.

dub: What happens on the 21st of December 2012?

Just checked the calendar, we will be in the studio during the day and have the Friday night off. The world won’t end, that’s for sure. Someone told us that the team at CERN were considering releasing a paper on the 21st of December 2012? Also heard that the Mayan calendar did not take leap years in to account and in fact the world should have already ended.

Either Way… We will be in the studio during the day and partying Friday night.
