IMS Ibiza – 11 years and counting

In Germany we call all equal numbers (11, 22, 33 etc.) a ‚Schnapszahl’, means a ‚schnapps number’, basically just a reason to have another ‚chupito’ if you need one. But in that case i would say ‚down the hatch’ for the IMS for staying another year at the forefront of electronic music. As said last year, the IMS has become a thinktank for music lovers, brands and attendees were looking forward to get to know new trends and the latest news during the 4 days of the event held in the Hard Rock Hotel in Ibiza under the claim of ‚Balancing Our Business’.

Talking about ‚chupitos’, the panel to talk about what happend to Tim Berling aka Avicii was of the most emotional ones because this young artist commited suicide as a consequence of the life in the limelight and the tight schedule with all the negative side effects that come with it while all he ever wanted is to make music. Pete tong lead the panel and stated “in my 40 years of being around in this world I can’t think of one single person that achieved success who hasn’t paid a price via health, relationships, divorce, broken homes, addiction, depression and anxiety” followed by „we weren’t supposed to die chasing the dream“ and closed it with „our industry needs healing, and people want to be healed“.

The panel served as intro to another interesting one called ‚Safe From Harm – Our Duty To Care’ talking about a study called ‚can music make you sick?’ – in my personal opinion a contradiction in itself. What is true is that all that comes with it has become so popular and overloaded that it is really hard to stay on top of the list and maintain a healthy lifestyle, that is why projects such as ‚Help Musicians’ from the UK aim to give advice to anybody experiencing health issues caused by the (ab)use of drugs with all its side effects.

On the second day it was Bradley Gunn Raver who delivered an emotional statement via satlellite saying that his love for electronic music helped him to live with Asperger’s Syndrome – so much for ‚can music make you sick?’. And, closing the circle with the panel from day one Freddie Fellowes said something i can agree on 110%, it was something like ‚humans have taken drugs throughout the whole history of humanity, the problem is our approach to drugs, we need to rise consciousness towards a healthy relationship with it’, so to say the dose makes the poison, as with everything in life.

The final countdown at the Baluart in Ibiza town up inside the castle was once more an event of extra class, i guess there are few better locations on this planet. While you overlook the port of Ibiza town to your right and the castle to your left there is this massive stage in front of you and thousands of other ‚afficionados’ enjoyed the great lightshow and the superb quality of sound. Winner for me this year was undoubtedly Papa Sven who had the final and only single slot in the line-up, setting things right after a, excuse the word, more-than-boring-hands-in-the-air set from Danny Tenaglia who added one break after the other with Guy Gerber trying to bring some beats inbetween. Sven played some solid German Techno creating that very special vibe one can only perform if he has the experience of a true master.
