GH – Audio Democracy
Pittsburgh is increasingly visible on the global house scene thanks to acts like Pittsburgh Track Authority and many others.
Now comes a full length from one of the city’s other main players, namely GH aka Geoffrey Huber aka one half of EdgePlay with Michael Hanlon, and together the pair also run the Stem & Leaf label. Here he serves up an album that plays out like a subtle DJ mix.
And for that to be the case GH must have some real DJ experience because this really does build perfectly, from supple and warm to much more upright and tense in the final third. Importantly, though, the gear shifts are subtle and a cohesive style ties all these cuts together despite their varying moods and grooves.
Last track Species With Amnesia is an experimental, broken beat and gurgling affair with weird spoken words adding to the atmosphere. Elsewhere its the elastic, flipping beats of The Un-Sub with its echoing vocals and slick groove that really get you dancing, as does the deep, wooden and wobbly title track with its searchlight like synth moving across the tracks horizon.
All in all this is a masterful album that will be a great buy for any working DJs looking to add some classy house tool to their record bags. Similarly, because of the sensitive way in which it unfolds, it also makes for a great listen at home on headphones.
