EMERGING IBIZA REVIEW

Ibiza is recognised around the world as the summer hotspot that everyone has to go visit as a punter, and everyone must play as a headline DJ. Trouble is, how do you get that first break? How do you cut through the competition and prove your worth with the big dogs? Well, hoping to answer that important question is Emerging Ibiza.

Emerging Ibiza is a brand new platform and festival concept where the world’s best artists and DJs select the hottest up and coming talents and then have them showcase their skills at a series of events across the White Isle this summer. Via public voting and expert selections, those that are the most rated then get to play at a number of events spread out across 5 days, many clubs and even boat and beach parties. Essentially, it’s a fantastic break for any emergent talent. What’s more, the prices of the five-day event were more than affordable, especially given how much even a soft drunk costs elsewhere around Ibiza.

Kicking things off was an opening party at Sands Beach Club. Things started in friendly style with a lovely three-course meal and some killer warm up sounds from Bones, who got things off to a great start. On the first night it was to Space where Route 94 amongst others headlined and proved himself to be very much in control of a wide range of electronic styles and the crowd dancing in front of him all night seemed to agree.

Next up was one of the early highlights, and that was the day night event at Zoo Project, which itself has found and maintained one of the island’s finest venues in the old abandoned zoo up in the hills. The main man tonight was Renato Ratier, famed Brazilian DJ and producer and D Edge owner. His chosen talents included Borrowed Identity, who throughout the week impressed with his Berlin influenced techno sounds. Also on tonight were Zohki & Roozlee, Maher Daniel and Davis. Our, each of whom operate in their own little sonic pockets and won over their own sections of the crowd.

The rest of the week saw a pool party take over at Hotel Santos when Manu Gonzalez, Terje Bakke, Lewis Boardman and Joe Rolet all got their chance to shine in the spotlight and they surely took it. Chosen by Danny Whittle, Manu Gonzalez seemed to be a firm favourite for his textural tech and got great crowd reactions all night long.  Then it was up to the impressive Ushuaia Tower in Playa d’en Bossa for a fantastic event that was headed up by experts Steve Lawler, Renato Ratier and Yousef, with their chosen talents including Anek, Davis Genuino and Acid Mondays respectively.

It’s probably Anek, the all female duo, that impresses the most. They are fun to watch in the booth and do all sorts of tricks sonically, taking us down unexpected paths but never straying too far from a groove in the process. There was also a special after party in a secret location for weekly pass holders only which we had to miss cause after a full on week of partying and discovering new acts we were pooped, but at the same time we were happy to have been a part of what is hopefully a now annual affair in Ibiza.
