Argüello – Platonic Love EP
Dubstep might not be as in vogue as it once was, and in spite of Skrillex & co’s continuing penchant for the sound, it’s fair to say that it’s house that’s reigning supreme once more in 2015.
Even so, it’s worth reminding ourselves that – when done properly – it’s hard to get away from the fact that dubstep can be just as influential and as expertly produced as say, a deep house gem. Say hello then, to the work of Arguello, a young Colombian producer whose sound veers towards dubstep but also incorporates other sound facets into the agenda. A true bastion of eclecticism, Arguello (despite being but 21 years old), makes the sort of music that his dubstep peers could only dream of.
We’re judging this on the basis of the brilliant ‘Platonic Love’, a track that arrived on our doorstep recently thanks to its release on the RKJ imprint; itself a stronghold for clued-in beats. Anyway, the track really is one that’ll lead you to a whole new destination, and one that’s filled with warm, stuffy vibes aplenty. Energetic throughout, it still maintains a welcome human touch thanks to the ubiquitous female vocal and the spliced male vocals that help it reach another dimension still. An engaging and carefree track, it’s unlike anything I’ve encountered this side of 2015 yet. Hats off here to the man they call Arguello on a job very well done indeed.
