Very Impotent Posh

You need a certain state of mind to write an Editor’s Letter, one of the best is a mix of rage, impatience and frustration – words just float out of your mind.

What really breaks my balls is the tendency of venues to create more and more VIP areas.

Sometimes i feel like i am in India with its castes visiting a venue that is supposed to make all people happy, not just the one’s who can afford it.

It is no real fun to pay 40 Euros for a water (10), a beer (12) and a longdrink (18) just because it is like it is. The other day i went to the opening of Plan Be, finding a price range that is most fair – 2,50 for a water, 5 for a beer or a shot and 7,50 for a longdrink. Some would say this is incredibly cheap but i can tell you the margin is still huge compared to the prices you pay at a wholesaler buying huge quantities. And pretending the prices are so high for educational reasons because people drink less alcohol is absolute bullshit, it is fruit of sheer greed. I mean, 10 Euros for a water means a lot of people having to work almost 2 hours to afford one!

If you take a close look you see that the bars in the clubs are empty, people stick to their glasses and inviting your friends to some chupitos can easily ruin your holiday savings. And there is more ‘botellon’ than ever, people staying on the parking place near to have drinks before they go inside a club because they can not afford a decent drink inside. Not funny.

I do not say that all have to lower the prices, if anybody is happy to pay a fortune for a few drinks or an overpriced dinner then feel free to do so if it makes you feel better because you can afford it, but if all go in the same direction we are in deep trouble.

Ibiza is a bubble in our (i can’t stand the word) crisis that is crushing our economies all over the globe, but this does not give us the right to steal from the people that feed us. It is like bucking the branch you are sitting on thinking you get away with it. Why not making different prices, one for the VIPs in their areas and a decent one for the ones that come to just party? Maybe because then all would go to the cheaper bar??

In times when ‘second hand’ or ‘used’ is called ‘vintage’ to make it sound better we should consider giving everybody the chance to have a good time, be them VIPs or ‘ordinary’ clubbers.

The other day i read that a russian oligarch, the one who invented the russian facebook called VKontakte, threw handmade paper planes made of banknotes out of his office window to see how people down on the street would fight to get one. In times where 1% of the world’s population owns 99% of all money it is just not right to take the piss out of the ones that finance your fortune, and converting a party into a showdown of ‘who can spend more money’ is quite the same thing – it just looks different.

One last quote out of the interview from Philipp M.A.N.D.Y.  in our new edition nails it to the point:

Don’t ask what the party can do for you – ask what you can do for the party.
