etnographic museum of santa ines

Toni came to Ibiza about fifteen years ago and was fascinated by its beauty and history, culture and diversity.

But soon he realized that, the more he wanted to find out about the past, the less interest of the Islanders about their very own history he found. As so often, if you are surrounded by something all the time you don’t take notice of it after a time and loose interest.

So he said to himself that his task was to recover the history of Ibiza, opening a museum and documenting the history by himself. How you do that? Go around the island and collect as much items as you can, finding out the history behind each one. Where does he find all those treasures? ‘Mostly in the bins, best time is just before the summer when lots of people clean their houses, or to rent them for the season or to get rid of all this ‘old’ stuff’ he states. Unbelievable, no? So he found a house (obviously not in the bin), actually it was two houses that got united after a while, both about 350 – 400 years old, on the way from Santa Ines to Santa Gertrudis, and converted the different rooms in showcases to demonstrate how life was about from hundreds of years ago until recently.

Here are some samples, the rest of the pictures you find in the gallery:

Original ibiçencan tobacco roll, more than 130 years old. The cut got sealed with horse shit to prevent the moths from attacking it…

Original balance, they used grains from the carob tree as each one of them weighs exactly the same!

The mystic ‘Black Bowl’ where a dwarf used to live in, get the full story at your own visit!

An interesting mix of modern technologies…

In the kitchen he found almost 400 (!) layers of chalk, for every year there is one, as they painted the kitchen once a year with a new layer…

The visit to this unique museum is free, he lives of donations and the sale of local products he does himself. But not only that, he tries to redo some of the items he got in his collection, as for example an original ibiçencan sandal, it took him 280 hours to do only one of them… Or he restores the old chalk paint in the rooms, finding almost 400 layers of it on the kitchen walls. I could go on and on but you have to see this place with your own eyes and listen to his stories with your own ears to get the full impact.

To get there you take the road to Santa Ines from San Rafael, then when you come down the valley of almond trees, before arriving to the actual village of Santa Ines you take a right to San Mateo, then after about 200 metres you find the sign on the left side. But better call before Andrea, his connection to the outer world, to make sure he is there. Thanks to Toni there is somebody really interested in the history of Ibiza, maybe one day the very own Ibiçencos have to ask him about their past…

Es Pujols – Etnographic Museum of Santa Ines, Phone: 0034 696 630 443. Open: Daily from 10 – 1 am and 5 to 8 pm. Free entrance, tasters of Ibiçencan products included, donations are very welcome.
